Etching/Intaglio. Is a printmaking method in whereby an inked image is transferred to paper from the surface of a metal plate. First a layer of wax is applied to the metal surface. A drawing is then made through the wax with an etching needle, exposing the metal underneath. This exposed metal is then 'bitten' away when the plate is left in acid for a short time leaving you with your image etched into the metal plate. Printing ink is then applied to the plate and wiped away leaving ink in only the etched areas. This is then printed onto dampened paper under heavy pressure by means of an etching press. The surface of the paper is pushed into the etched areas of the plate picking up the ink and creating the image. The plate can then be re inked, giving you multiple prints. Other methods of creating etched marks and tones can then be added to the plate and reprinted such as Aquatint, Soft ground etching and Sugar lift and we will experiment with these methods.
